Established in 1988 with the purchase of 13 cows from some of the top female lines in the country.
The herd consists of approximately 100 Pedigree Simmentals, 8 Pedigree Hereford cows and 35 crossbred used for bull proving. Tartan Teasle our original stock bull was purchased at the same time and proved to be an exceptional foundation sire with outstanding daughters with over 25 of his sons sold at Perth and over 100 at home for breeding purposes. Unfortunately he died this year at the age of 13 but we still have a small amount of his semen in store that we can always return to as a proven anchor. He still has an EBV of 33 with an accuracy of 80% which makes him in the top 5% of the breed. Our breeding program aims to produce cows and bulls with top growth rates, muscling, ease of fleshing and good milkinf ability cost effectively off grass and forage based diets, factors we feel are of paramount importance for profitable beef production at home and abroad. The herd is in the Signet Excel Club with the herd average BLUP figures in the top 25%. All our stock is Group Reared and fed once a day with a Keenan Diet Feeder with a Forage based ration. The herd came second in the Large Herd section of the Midland Simmental Club Competition with our yearling heiffers coming first. |

The Caldwell Herd is linked with the Sacombe and Crackley herds in a Fast-Track breeding program* of genetic improvement that can only be undertaken with a wide base of at least 250 cows.
WE believe the future of the breed can best be served by pooling of our genetics and using a link sire on 20% of the herds each year to speed up the selection of superior improvement. Caldwell Jumping Jack has been chosen for his muscling, growth and the milking ability of his dam with an EBV of 35 (top 1% of the Breed) as the link sire for the year 2000 and semen is being collected at this time. |
